What a Face Landmark Measures

What 478 face points can locate in a photo, which distances they support, and what they cannot see under the skin.

What the 478 points are for

A face landmark model finds a set of points on the eyes, brows, nose, lips, jaw, and forehead so a measurement knows where the skin is, not just where the picture frame is. The browser tools use that map on your device. Eye spacing, nose width, brow height, and the skin analysis all start from those points, then either measure a distance or sample the color inside a zone.

The points are a coordinate system. They are not a diagnosis and they are not an identity match.

What the points cannot see

They cannot see under the skin, count individual blemishes reliably in ordinary room light, or tell a flush from inflammation. A front photo also flattens the side of the jaw and the bridge of the nose, which is why profile notes on this site are labeled as weak estimates. For a saved history of hydration, texture, tone, acne, pores, and redness, use the app scan in the same light each time.
